Frequently asked questions about author portraits
Question: How does the process work?
Answer: Each portrait I take is tailored to your needs and preferences. An essential part of the process is determining what kind of atmosphere you want your portrait to reflect. Before the session we will discuss your book and the audience for your specific work. Photographs can be taken at your home, my studio, or another location of your choosing. But no matter where the photo is taken, the portrait session is a relaxed and enjoyable event. Makeup and wardrobe services are available.
All images are lightly retouched, and special digital imaging requests are easily accommodated. Proofs are shown on a private web page, so you can make your selections without returning to the studio. I can send the appropriate resized file to your publisher if needed.
Question: What should I wear for my author portrait?
Answer: Since an author portrait is an important part of communicating with your reading audience, your clothing should reflect who you are. As we discuss your book, ideas for clothing will become clearer. In general, it's best to avoid patterns and season-specific fabrics. Simplicity is the key. Often, the colors you wear will be influenced by your book cover design.
Question: What about makeup and styling for my author portrait?
Answer: Makeup is an important component of a portrait session for both men and women. Since photography lights can wash out features, women should wear a bit more makeup than usual for the session, and men can also benefit greatly from applying a light foundation or powder. Even if you prefer a natural look, a good foundation can smooth out skin tones, and a little lipstick and mascara can bring out your features.
I highly recommend having makeup done professionally for your photograph. Your skin will have a fine, smooth texture, your best features will be emphasized, and your natural coloring will sparkle. For an additional fee, I provide an on-location makeup artist who specializes in the photo image. She will also help with clothing decisions and hair touch-ups. I often work with Lori Johnson of Your Best Image. You can visit her site at www.yourbestimagepid.com and click on Photo Services for more information.
Question: How long is the photo session?
Answer: Sessions vary from about an hour to a full day, depending on your needs. The average session is about an hour and a quarter.
Question: What is your turnaround time?
Answer: You can usually see your proofs within one to two days after the shoot. Final files are usually ready within two days after the order is placed.
Question: I always look terrible in pictures. Will you ever get a good portrait of me?
Answer: This is an extremely common concern. People who say they don't photograph well usually tense up in front of a camera-which will indeed produce a less than flattering photo! I am dedicated to creating an atmosphere that will help you to relax. I have studied lighting, directing and posing techniques that will bring out your best features and most positive attitude. I guarantee you will get a picture you love!
