Frequently Asked Questions about Headshots for The Arts

Question: What do casting agents and directors look for in a headshot?
Answer:
The most important thing is that you look like your headshot! If you want to drive a casting agent or director crazy, send in a highly made-up, glamorous headshot and then show up for the casting call with a fresh-scrubbed look. You start out at a disadvantage if the casting agent can't recognize you. You want to aim for a photo that looks like YOU, on one of your best days.

Question: Should I have a close-up or three-quarter view?
Answer:
People who are casting you may have individual preferences about how close a headshot should be. Some prefer a head-and shoulders shot, others a three-quarter view. Preferences vary from coast to coast, as well. It's probably a good idea to include both views in the session. But chances are you won't be rejected for a part that's right for you because of the layout of your headshot.

Question: Should we take the photos in the studio or outside?
Answer:
This is really personal preference. As long as the lighting is fairly even and flattering, either can work well. I often include both indoor and outdoor shots in the session, so you have different looks to choose from.

Question: What about makeup and hair for my photography session?
Answer:
Makeup is an important component of a good headshot session, for both men and women. Since hot lights can wash out features, women should wear a bit more makeup than usual for the session, and men can also benefit greatly from applying a light foundation or powder. Even if you prefer a natural look, a good foundation can smooth out skin tones, and a little lipstick and mascara can bring out your features. For an additional fee, we provide an on-location makeup artist who specializes in the photo image. She can also help with clothing decisions and hair arrangement. You can visit her site at www.yourbestimagepid.com and click on Photo Services.

Question: What clothing and jewelry should I choose for a headshot?
Answer:
A top with a simple collar (jewel neck, slight V, neat-looking T-shirt) looks best. Choose a solid color that is somewhat darker than your natural skin tone. Black can work, although it tends to block up in reproduction. A deep red, gray, green or blue is better. No white or light pastels, please. Long sleeves are preferable. Even the slimmest arm can look chunky under the lights! Bring several clean and pressed tops to the session.

Simple, non-distracting jewelry is fine, such as stud earrings or a thin necklace. In general, avoid dangly earrings, unless they are an integral part of your "look." Or, you can wear no jewelry at all.

Question: How can I get multiple copies of my photographs?
Answer:
There are several places where you can get multiple copies of your 8x10 glossy. Some are mail-order and some are local. I recommend The Pixel Pusher. Their quality is excellent.

Question: I am the least photogenic person in the world. Will you ever get a good picture of me?
Answer:
This is an extremely common concern. The best thing you can do is to forget about how you look and concentrate on something you love, such as a person or song. You will be directed during the shoot, but this overall concept can help you out. I guarantee you will get a picture you love, or you will get a reshoot or refund!
