Family Portraits
My goal is to capture the natural interactions of family members in my studio, in their homes, or in a location that has special meaning. In my images, I explore the humorous and poignant interactions between parents and children, as well as the expressions that are unique to each individual. My sessions have an atmosphere that is spontaneous and relaxed.
My family portraits take different forms. Some families come to my studio for a traditional portrait, where we use simple backdrops (I'm not a fan of elaborate props!) and simple yet dramatic lighting. Although many people in my portraits are smiling, often a serious, contemplative expression is just as compelling.
Some families prefer that I travel to their homes to photograph how they live their lives. These photographs tend to be more spontaneous than studio portraits, since people have more room to move, and have the comfort in being in their own home. My approach is to follow family members around as they perform daily tasks and interact with one another. Sometimes I combine the two styles and photograph families in my studio and also in my beautiful outdoor area that has a pond and is surrounded by woodlands.
